Ukrainian-American Defendica Systems to cooperate with US munition manufacturer

Day & Zimmermann Lone Star, a US company, has announced cooperation with Defendica Systems – a Ukrainian-American defence tech manufacturer. They plan to combine Defendica’s technologies with Day & Zimmermann’s capabilities in munitions production.

Defender Media spoke with Jim Gamache, co-founder and president of Defendica, and explores what the company does and what its cooperation with US partners entails.

What the cooperation involves

Defendica develops detonation and initiation systems, intelligence and sensor technology solutions, electronic warfare tools and secure communications. The company has its own research and development laboratory covering the full development cycle.

Meanwhile, Day & Zimmermann Lone Star specialises in the production of munitions of various calibres, which it supplies to the US Army and allies. It is a subsidiary of Day & Zimmermann, which was founded in 1901.

The companies plan to assess technical compatibility, conduct joint testing and ultimately work out how to integrate detonator, initiation system and sensor technologies into Day & Zimmermann’s scalable solutions.

Defendica’s systems are developed in cooperation with military units, though project details are not yet disclosed. In the cooperation announcement, Jim Gamache said that their engineering begins with a request from the unit they are in contact with and ends with a system that the unit uses.

What is known about Defendica Systems

Defendica Systems Inc. was founded in 2023. The company is registered in the US and has a subsidiary legal entity in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Gamache says all of the company’s offices are located in Lviv, and all employees except him are Ukrainian.

He himself will soon set off on his tenth trip to Ukraine since the start of the full-scale war. The company also has another co-founder – a serving member of Ukraine’s military whose name is not disclosed.

‘When we registered the company in the US, we were looking to the future’, Gamache explains the company’s registration in America. Defendica Systems is also part of the Ukrainian manufacturers’ cluster IRON.
