Ukrainian deftech company Athlon Avia and the National University “Kyiv Aviation Institute” have jointly opened an aircraft modelling laboratory. It has been named AVIA Lab, Athlon Avia told Defender Media.

The laboratory organises training sessions for groups of students and schoolchildren. They study aircraft models, build their own, practise flights, and hold competitions in the university’s hangar. Students are taught, in particular, to:

  • work with technical drawings and check the centre of gravity;
  • operate a 3D printer, laser cutter, and hand tools;
  • select materials and reinforce structures.

To this end, laser machines, CNC machines, and a thermovacuum machine have been installed. The laboratory wing will also feature an assembly room, a composites workshop, and a conference hall.

The first cohort has already completed the programme – 60 people took part – and the second intake has also begun. Students from other universities, as well as schoolchildren, are also eligible to participate. The youngest participant in the second group is 13 years old.

Athlon Avia has been manufacturing unmanned aerial systems since 2013. The company’s product line includes two versions of the “Furia” reconnaissance UAV, the “Silent Thunder” strike drone, and the SR-1200 multicopter. The manufacturer launched its own military recruitment campaign last year.
