Odd Systems is considering setting up a factory in the US to manufacture camera sensors. The company’s co-founder, Yaroslav Azhnyuk, stated this in a comment to the American publication Defense Daily.

According to Azhnyuk, despite localisation efforts, Ukrainian and Western drones still contain components of Chinese origin – for example, sensors for drone cameras and battery cells. To address this, Odd Systems has begun building a facility in Ukraine to produce thermal imaging camera sensors in serial.

Now Odd Systems has received significant interest from parties in the United States, the co-founder stated. The company is therefore considering constructing an equivalent facility in the United States to produce the required volumes of sensors.

No further details were provided; however, it is known that investment in the Ukrainian facility may reach $70 million. The need for domestic sensor production is explained by the fact that one in five thermal imaging cameras produced globally is sent to the Ukrainian front.

“The EU’s annual thermal imaging camera output would cover three to four months of Ukraine’s needs. And the price is four to five times higher,” the company stated. Domestic full-cycle camera production is therefore a matter of Ukrainian security.
