Recruitment, Diversity & Equal Opportunity Policy
Principles of recruitment, professional development, diversity, equal opportunity and staff well-being
1. Recruitment & Training
Defender Media maintains recruitment and training practices for editorial staff and contributors to ensure high journalistic standards, professional conduct and staff well-being.
Recruitment decisions are based on relevant qualifications, experience and competencies required for each role. New team members are expected to familiarise themselves with Defender Media’s editorial policies, ethical standards and workplace procedures.
We support the ongoing professional development of our editorial team through knowledge sharing, practical experience and access to relevant resources where appropriate.
Our recruitment and training practices are designed to uphold editorial quality while promoting the safety, well-being and professional integrity of all staff and contributors.

2. Diversity
Defender Media is committed to providing equal opportunities in recruitment and employment. We welcome applications from all qualified individuals regardless of gender, age, disability, ethnicity, nationality, religion or belief, sexual orientation, or other characteristics protected by applicable law.
Recruitment and employment decisions are based solely on an individual’s qualifications, skills, experience and ability to perform the role.
We are committed to maintaining an inclusive and respectful working environment in which all team members are treated fairly and have equal opportunities to contribute and develop professionally.
As a small and international media organisation, Defender Media values diversity of backgrounds, perspectives and experiences within its team and seeks to foster a culture of openness, collaboration and mutual respect.
As part of our diversity commitments, Defender Media:
- publishes vacancies using clear, non-discriminatory language and selection criteria;
- uses inclusive and gender-neutral language in recruitment materials whenever possible;
- encourages applications from candidates with diverse professional and personal backgrounds;
- promotes equal opportunities throughout recruitment, employment and collaboration processes; and
- provides team members with a safe channel for reporting concerns related to discrimination or unequal treatment.
Responsibility for implementing the diversity and equal opportunity principles set out in this policy rests with the designated management lead at Defender Media.
3. Anti-discrimination
Defender Media maintains a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination, harassment and unequal treatment in the workplace. We are committed to providing a professional, safe and respectful working environment for all team members.
Our policies and procedures prohibit discrimination on any grounds protected by applicable law, including but not limited to gender, age, disability, ethnicity, nationality, religion or belief, sexual orientation or any other protected characteristic.
All employment-related decisions, including recruitment, remuneration, promotion, professional development and termination of employment or collaboration, are made fairly and without discrimination.
Any concerns or allegations of discriminatory behaviour are treated seriously and may be reported to management for appropriate review and action.
4. Equality of Opportunity
Defender Media is committed to ensuring equality of opportunity in recruitment, employment, professional development and career progression. All individuals are assessed on their qualifications, skills, experience and performance, without regard to any protected characteristic.
We strive to provide fair and transparent opportunities for all team members to contribute, develop professionally and take on new responsibilities within the organisation.
Employment and collaboration decisions are based on merit, organisational needs and professional competencies. We are committed to fostering an inclusive workplace where everyone has equal access to opportunities and is treated with fairness and respect.
5. Staff Well-being & Editorial Independence
Defender Media is committed to supporting the well-being, professional integrity and editorial independence of all employees, contributors and contract journalists.
We seek to provide a respectful and supportive working environment that promotes professional development, open communication and work practices appropriate to the size and nature of our organisation.
Employment, freelance and contracting arrangements are designed to protect editorial independence and ensure that journalists and contributors are free from improper commercial, political or external influence when carrying out their editorial responsibilities.
No employee, contractor, sponsor, advertiser or external partner may exert undue influence over editorial decisions or journalistic content. Editorial decisions are made in accordance with Defender Media’s Editorial Policy and journalistic standards.
Defender Media is committed to safeguarding both the well-being of its team members and their ability to report and publish independently, accurately and in the public interest.
