Automated turrets have already destroyed more than 60 targets as part of a private air defence project. Over the past month, they have shot down dozens of enemy drones over Kyiv, according to the state cluster Brave1.

Brave1 began developing automated turret systems in 2024. They are now used by private air defence companies and the Ukrainian Air Force. The targets they have shot down include jet-powered Banderol drones and Geran-5.

Brave1 adds that several systems work effectively against aerial targets. In the video, one can notice the Predator turret from UGV Robotics. Remote-controlled weapon stations are also being developed by Frontline Robotics and Roboneers, while Fulltime Robotics previously presented the Slimbeam laser turret.

At the beginning of October, more than 12 Sky Sentinel automated counter-drone turrets were installed in Kyiv, UNITED24 Media reported, citing Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat. Adviser to the President of Ukraine Serhii Beskrestnov also added that the installation of automated turrets in the capital will continue.

Effective city protection requires between 10 and 30 such turrets. In addition to the units in Kyiv, the 636th Separate Anti-Aircraft Machine Gun Battalion in Sumy Oblast also received 10 Sky Sentinel systems in the summer.

The turret combines a heavy machine gun with an automated fire control module. Once a target is detected, the optics track the drone, while the software calculates its speed, trajectory, distance and the required lead. The turret can engage fast targets flying at speeds of up to 800 km/h.
