The heavy logistical UGV Protector from Ukrainian Armor was officially codified in June of this year. The drone has already entered mass production and will be supplied to units complete with a trailer, a ground control station, and a mast. Army TV provides detailed report on the Protector.

Protector was developed on the basis of a diesel SUV, taking into account the combat experience of the Ukrainian military. It can perform tasks on any terrain at any time of the year. Its main purpose is to transport ammunition and equipment, and to evacuate the wounded. In addition, the drone can be used as a platform for a robotic combat module, mobile electronic warfare and electronic warfare systems, etc.

Usually, the operator is not inside the Protector while driving. However, if the need arises, they can sit inside and control it, just like a regular vehicle, with a joystick.

Technical Characteristics

  • Payload capacity: The Protector can carry up to 700 kg of cargo on its own, as well as transport a trailer. During an experiment, it calmly handled a trailer that was loaded with a 3-tonne SUV.
  • Engine: It has a 3-litre diesel engine with a capacity of 190 horsepower, which has a range of 400-500 km. This is a significant advantage compared to electric ground complexes.
  • Optics: It has no headlights; instead, there is an infrared camera for night missions. New models will feature a washer to clean the cameras from the remote control and will have cameras with sound transmission.
  • Red button: This is an emergency stop function — it turns off the power supply in an emergency situation and stops the drone.

The maximum speed of the Protector is 45 km/h. Protector has three types of communication to counter electronic warfare. One type of communication is satellite, via Starlink, which provides an unlimited control distance (200, 500 km and more).

The pilot’s main work takes place at the ground control station. From there, you can monitor all indicators: speed, revolutions and position. The screen displays a virtual steering wheel, brakes, throttle and gearbox, which allows you to control it in the same way as in a regular car. The screen also shows the coordinates of the drone’s location.

It is worth noting that the Protector was showcased at an arms exhibition in Turkey. In addition, at an exhibition in Denmark, Ukrainian developers demonstrated control of an unmanned UGV at a distance of about 2,000 kilometres.
