A former Ukrainian ambassador to Canada and deputy defence minister, Shevchenko will lead the company&#8217;s activities in Ukraine, Defender Media has learned from the team. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, Helsing also announced <a href=\"https:\/\/helsing.ai\/newsroom\/helsing-raises-1-8bn-in-series-e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">raising $1.8bn in investment<\/a>. The valuation stood at $18bn. The funds are intended to accelerate the development and integration of new AI platforms into the defence sectors of partner countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Helsing and its Ukrainian division do<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Helsing was founded in 2021, and its flagship product is currently the HX-2 mid-strike drone, which it supplies to Ukraine and Germany. Its main feature is artificial intelligence that allows it to detect and engage targets under EW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the drone can be used as part of a swarm thanks to Altra \u2013 a software platform for combat planning and management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company&#8217;s hardware developments also include the SG-1 underwater reconnaissance drone and the CA-1 Europa autonomous fighter jet. Software products include AI for fighter jets and a platform for planning underwater missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Helsing has been operating in Ukraine since early 2024. At that time, Ukraine&#8217;s Ministry of Defence signed a contract for 4,000 drones, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bild.de\/politik\/ausland-und-internationales\/deutschlands-geheime-superwaffe-ki-gesteuerte-drohnen-fuer-ukraine-6739cec347294e7a6bfec042\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Bild<\/a> reports. In 2025, the startup stated that it planned to supply the Armed Forces of Ukraine with a further 6,000 HX-2 drones. The press service adds that since the start of this year, the Defence Forces have received &#8220;thousands of AI drones&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-text-align-left wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/thedefender.media\/en\/2026\/06\/germany-freyja-termit\/\"><strong>Read more<\/strong>: Germany to support Ukraine\u2019s anti-ballistic missile programme and fund production of thousands of TerMIT UGVs<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, it is known that in early 2026 Ukraine suspended its order of HX-2 drones following technical problems that arose during testing. Helsing now states that its drones have a success rate of around 70% in Ukraine, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/11\/business\/dealbook\/drone-factory-helsing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">New York Times<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In parallel, Helsing is building cooperation with Ukrainian companies: it has agreed with Ukrainian UAV manufacturer Culver Aerospace on joint development and <a href=\"https:\/\/thedefender.media\/en\/2026\/04\/germany-builds-with-ukraine\/\">production of deep strike drones in Germany<\/a>, which will also finance it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is known about Shevchenko<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Helsing co-founder Gundbert Scherf says Shevchenko will be able to take the company&#8217;s mission in Ukraine to a new level and lead the next stage of its work. Helsing has not yet commented on the work of its local office or its development plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Andriy Shevchenko began his career in journalism, working at several newspapers and TV channels. He was one of the founders of Channel 5, and later became vice-president of the National Television Company of Ukraine, which was eventually transformed into Suspilne Broadcasting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2006, he entered politics and was elected as a Member of Parliament for Batkivshchyna three times. In 2014, he also ran in elections but failed to enter parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"664\" height=\"769\" src=\"https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/shevchenko_photo.jpg\" alt=\"\u0410\u043d\u0434\u0440\u0456\u0439 \u0428\u0435\u0432\u0447\u0435\u043d\u043a\u043e (\u0424\u043e\u0442\u043e: Helsing)\" class=\"wp-image-34200\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/4;object-fit:cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/shevchenko_photo.jpg 664w, https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/shevchenko_photo-259x300.jpg 259w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 664px) 100vw, 664px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Andriy Shevchenko (Photo: Helsing)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From 2015 to 2021, he was Ukraine&#8217;s Ambassador to Canada, and from 2017 to 2021, he was also the representative to the International Civil Aviation Organization.
