In addition, the Russians demonstrated trials of a new missile-type interceptor, “Molniya”, an autonomous droneport for vertical-takeoff unmanned aerial vehicles, and upgrades to other previously deployed UAVs. More details on Russian military developments are covered in the weekly Defender Media review, Black Mirror.

The scale of drone and missile production in Russia

The production of unmanned aerial vehicles and missiles in Russia is insufficient to build significant stockpiles of most armaments. This is reported by Serhii Beskrestnov, an adviser to the Ukrainian Minister of Defence. The volume of stockpiles is assessed using the manufacturing dates on weapon systems recovered in Ukraine.

According to Beskrestnov, Russian forces recently attacked Kharkiv with a Shahed manufactured just days prior to the strike. “Shahed drones usually carry a production date preceding their deployment by 5–15 days. This indicates that a significant share of such UAVs is committed to operations almost immediately after rolling off the production line,” Beskrestnov notes.

9M723 ballistic missiles of the Iskander system are arriving with 2025 production dates, which may indicate that Russia maintains an inventory of around 180–250 such missiles. Zircon missiles used in May are dated 2026, and most Kh-101 cruise missiles were also manufactured in 2026, typically only a few months before operational deployment.

Meanwhile, according to available data, Kh-59 missiles are dated to the third quarter of 2025.

Testing of an autonomous droneport

The company RusDronport has conducted the first trials of an autonomous droneport — a ground station capable of independently servicing, storing, and launching vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) UAVs. The system operates without human intervention at all stages of flight. It is claimed that during operations, the station can stream real-time video feeds to several units simultaneously.

Russian unmanned aerial vehicle for launch from an autonomous station

During the trials, the UAV conducted flights in strong, gusty winds of around 10 m/s.
