Auto-guidance in Molniya, automated air defence, ring-wing drone and other Russian miltech innovations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Ukrainian sky, fixed-wing enemy UAVs equipped with a machine-vision targeting system, as well as previously unknown ring-wing drones, have been spotted. Russians have also developed new smart guided munitions for air-dropped bombs and automated ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft installations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More about these and other Russian military tech novelties \u2013 in Black Mirror #30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Unknown ring\u2011wing drone<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia has <a href=\"https:\/\/militarnyi.com\/en\/news\/russians-used-an-unknown-drone-with-a-closed-wing-against-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">begun<\/a> deploying over Ukraine a previously unknown type of unmanned aerial vehicle featuring an unusual ring\u2011shaped wing structure.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"573\" src=\"https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/n1clteynvx2ypuqgphru-1024x573.webp\" alt=\"White ring\u2011wing drone\" class=\"wp-image-14242\" style=\"width:400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/n1clteynvx2ypuqgphru-1024x573.webp 1024w, https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/n1clteynvx2ypuqgphru-300x168.webp 300w, https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/n1clteynvx2ypuqgphru-768x430.webp 768w, https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/n1clteynvx2ypuqgphru.webp 1173w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hostile drone was recorded by a Ukrainian air-defence UAV; its purpose has not yet been determined \u2013 it could perform reconnaissance or strike missions. In the ring\u2011wing design, the wing tips are joined (top-to-top and bottom-to-bottom), so there are no conventional winglets \u2013 this reduces the intensity of wing tip vortices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An additional lifting effect occurs when airflow passing through the closed contour is directed downward; this effect becomes stronger as the wing\u2019s angle of attack increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flow separation (stall) happens when, as the angle of attack increases, the airflow can no longer smoothly follow the wing\u2019s upper surface and peels away, forming vortices. In that case, the lift falls off sharply and the vehicle can lose controllability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>An underwater unmanned vehicle equipped with mini-torpedoes<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Developers at the Kuznetsov Naval Academy have received a patent for an underwater unmanned vehicle capable of carrying mini-torpedoes. The system is intended to search for and destroy maritime targets, including fortified (hardened) objects. It is equipped with a combined detection suite \u2013 optical, magnetic, and hydroacoustic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The drone can autonomously allocate targets among its torpedoes and overcome anti-torpedo defences. If it detects a threat, such as an enemy counter-torpedo, the vehicle can launch one of its mini-torpedoes to neutralise that threat and then proceed to attack the primary target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Auto-guidance in aircraft-type strike drones<\/strong><br>Military expert Serhii Beskrestnov (Flash) published intercepted video from a Russian UAV showing the operation of a target-auto-lock system and drone guidance via machine vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"360\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 636 \/ 360;\" width=\"636\" controls src=\"https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/fdownloader.net_aqof_717dkxyghmll2hvvg3zqiiej0s1ug8dot7nicree-vg575qm73bimmaoulrruunoj7lwbhegiyqhanluh0-e00cngurogpothkc9g_360p_sd.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Video from Flash\u2019s Facebook page<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSuch systems for FPV are no longer news, but guiding a cruise UAV\u00a0in wind conditions\u00a0is quite difficult,\u201d the expert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/2047099686075936\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">writes<\/a>. \u201cThis is done mainly to strike distant targets at moments when radio-communication near the ground disappears.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thus, the enemy is working on increasing the accuracy and range of UAV strikes of the Molniya type, Flash explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Automated ZU-23-2<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia <a href=\"https:\/\/militarnyi.com\/en\/news\/russians-developed-automated-zu-23-2-to-counter-ukrainian-drones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">tested<\/a> an automated air-defence system built on the ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft mounting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the modernised ZU-23-2, the system includes paired 6P49 Kord machine guns. Judging by published materials, the installation is configured as a stationary turret. A radar station for detecting and tracking airborne targets of unknown type is mounted on the turrets. Nearby, another radar unit may be a dome-type electronic warfare complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such a system was likely created to strengthen local air defence and to protect essential facilities and drone flight routes on Russian territory that cannot be effectively defended with existing means because of the country\u2019s large area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Modified two-seat light aircraft Yak-52<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia publicly demonstrated a modified two-seat light aircraft, the Yak-52B2, for the first time, adapted for destroying drones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new model is armed with a semi-automatic 12-gauge carbine. In the future, the aircraft are planned to be fitted with interceptor drones mounted under the wings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"571\" src=\"https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ati6hnrf8n19msd5hon6-1024x571.webp\" alt=\"Two-seat light aircraft \" class=\"wp-image-14236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ati6hnrf8n19msd5hon6-1024x571.webp 1024w, https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ati6hnrf8n19msd5hon6-300x167.webp 300w, https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ati6hnrf8n19msd5hon6-768x428.webp 768w, https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ati6hnrf8n19msd5hon6-1536x857.webp 1536w, https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ati6hnrf8n19msd5hon6.webp 1782w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Yak-52 upgrade encompasses both avionics (including a 360-degree search radar, a weather radar, and an onboard computer) and armament. A semi-automatic 12-gauge carbine with a magazine capacity of up to eight rounds is installed in the midsection of the right wing panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>New UMPKs for FAB-500T air bombs<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russian Su-34 aircraft <a href=\"https:\/\/militarnyi.com\/uk\/news\/novi-umpk-dlya-su-34-aviatsiya-rf-otrymala-mozhlyvist-zastosovuvaty-fab-500t-na-ponad-100-km\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">have been fitted<\/a> with new Universal Planning and Correction Modules (UPCM) for FAB-500T.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These systems are designed to convert conventional bombs into long-range, high\u2011precision glide munitions. The design features an extended tail section and enlarged wings \u2013 modifications intended to improve the bomb\u2019s aerodynamic characteristics and flight stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"784\" src=\"https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gtqbpc9vt5xa70l3vqqs-1024x784.webp\" alt=\" Air bombs\" class=\"wp-image-14238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gtqbpc9vt5xa70l3vqqs-1024x784.webp 1024w, https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gtqbpc9vt5xa70l3vqqs-300x230.webp 300w, https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gtqbpc9vt5xa70l3vqqs-768x588.webp 768w, https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gtqbpc9vt5xa70l3vqqs.webp 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to the upgraded UPCM, the FAB-500T\u2019s stated flight range exceeds 100 kilometres. This allows the Su-34 to engage targets without entering the engagement envelope of Ukrainian air\u2011defence systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>New interceptor drone<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new interceptor drone was unveiled in Moscow. The high\u2011speed interceptor from the Kulibin Club carries an explosive charge that is automatically activated when near the target, while artificial intelligence and an onboard computer help the drone pursue and destroy the target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"730\" src=\"https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ncxguhpuhrrdbygzwbzb-1024x730.webp\" alt=\"Black interceptor drone\" class=\"wp-image-14240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ncxguhpuhrrdbygzwbzb-1024x730.webp 1024w, https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ncxguhpuhrrdbygzwbzb-300x214.webp 300w, https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ncxguhpuhrrdbygzwbzb-768x548.webp 768w, https:\/\/thedefender.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ncxguhpuhrrdbygzwbzb.webp 1394w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AI enables the drone to fly autonomously to designated targets, coordinates over distances of 10\u201315 kilometres, and, according to claims, all the software is domestically developed. The first batches \u2013 reportedly numbering in the hundreds \u2013 have already been produced for testing, and the manufacturer is preparing for serial production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>UAV for remote monitoring<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Russia, a UAV for remote forest monitoring and delivery of humanitarian cargo has been patented; by its characteristics and design, it resembles the Geran\u20112 drone. The new drone\u2019s flight range is up to 1,800 km, with a payload capacity of 50\u201390 kg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The patent documents state that the UAV is an aircraft\u2011type glider built on a flying\u2011wing layout, featuring a triangular wing and a cylindrical nose section.
