Ukraine already produces jet engines with automatic start, which provide missiles with a flight range of up to 250 km. Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov reported that such achievements have been made by Scopa Industries, which succeeded in part thanks to last year’s grant from the state defence technology cluster Brave1. This engine is already being supplied to Ukrainian missile manufacturers. Fedorov did not provide further details, but published a video in which the sound of the Scopa Industries engine can be heard and elements of the missile design can be seen.

Scopa Industries is a Ukrainian aerospace start-up that specialises in high-speed jet systems and technologies for countering UAVs. The company’s one-page website states that the team is creating a new generation of jet engines and unmanned solutions for military and tactical applications.

Fedorov cited Scopa Industries as an example of a successful project in the field of Ukrainian missile development, which the country’s leadership aims to take to a new level. He added that Brave1 has launched its grant competitions: for the development of tactical ballistic missiles — the “Ukrainian HIMARS” — and for anti-aircraft missile systems to counter drones. Applications can be submitted until 9 September. Following verification and the signing of a non-disclosure agreement, developers may receive more than UAH 100 million for their projects.

Legal entities registered in Ukraine are eligible to participate in the grant competitions, provided they do not have 25% or more of their authorised capital directly or indirectly owned by the state and/or a territorial community, and do not hold non-profit status.

Under the terms of the competitions, developers must produce specific products or technologies, as defined by the conditions of each competition, with mandatory compliance with the approved specifications and standards.

Brave1 grant competitions provide for a substantially larger amount of funding, determined by the budget estimate — up to UAH 150 million for development. Applications are assessed by the competition commission, with the final decision taken by the supervisory board of the Ukrainian Startup Fund.

It is also worth noting that by the end of 2025, UAH 2.7 billion has been allocated for the updated Brave1 grant programme.
