The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has announced the launch of K4 Startup Studio — a programme designed to support domestic defence startups developing AI-based solutions. The top four teams among programme participants will each receive a $250,000 grant, along with mentorship and support from military experts. The initiative is being implemented with support from the German Ministry of Defence and Ukraine’s Better Regulation Delivery Office (BRDO).

According to the Ministry, the goal of K4 is to develop solutions that can deliver technological superiority on the battlefield. Four key challenges have been defined, directly addressing the needs of the Armed Forces — and teams are encouraged to submit proposals in these areas. However, applicants may also propose alternative AI-based solutions for defence. Full challenge descriptions and the application form are available on the programme’s website.

Applications are open until 15 August 2025. Up to 10 teams will be selected to participate in the programme, with four finalists receiving $250,000 grants to implement their solutions. Submissions will be evaluated by a grant committee composed of military experts and Defence Forces representatives — the future users of these technologies on the battlefield.

Each team will undergo a 4-month intensive development programme, which includes mentoring by leading Ukrainian and international experts, field testing, and direct feedback from military personnel. This will be followed by six months of tailored support, designed to lead to investment or a government contract.

The Ministry says the K4 Startup Studio is based on best-in-class acceleration models. “We already have real examples of effective AI deployment in combat — that’s why we believe in this direction and are inviting partners to invest in Ukrainian innovation. K4 is a programme for those ready to turn their code into a weapon in the hands of our defenders,” said Kateryna Chernogorenko, Deputy Minister of Defence.

Defender Media previously reported that the Brave1 defence tech cluster resumed its grant funding programme for promising new weapons developments.
